Part-Time Shelver

Downers Grove Public Library is seeking a friendly, enthusiastic shelver for our customer-centric Circulation team. Shelvers monitor the automatic materials sorter, shelve materials, and keep materials in order. In addition, shelvers help support the department by performing closing procedures and other tasks as needed.

We are looking for candidates who have the ability to:

  • file alphabetically and numerically accurately

  • do detail work accurately

  • prioritize and multitask in a detailed environment

  • walk and stand for extended periods

  • lift materials and push carts loaded with books

  • adapt well to technological changes

This position is a year-round, part-time position averaging 16 hours per week. The hours for the position are Mondays 5-9 pm; Thursdays 1-5 pm; Fridays 1-5 pm; and includes Saturday and Sunday rotation of four-hour shifts. The salary is $10.20 per hour.

Children’s Services Assistant, Downers Grove Public Library (Part-Time)

Do you enjoy working with children and their families to provide them with fun and educational programs and opportunities?  Do you have a love of children’s literature and trends? Are you committed to providing excellent customer service to all patrons?  The Kids Room is looking for you!

Children’s Services Assistants work the Kids Room service desk answering reference questions and providing reader’s advisory for children and their families.  Assistants also present programs to children of all ages inside and outside of the library.  We are looking for candidates who:

  • Provide excellent customer service to the public
  • Have experience working with children
  • Are adept at using technology and feel comfortable sharing that knowledge
  • Are willing to read and learn about children’s literature
  • Possess great communication and organization skills and have the ability to work independently

This opening is for a year-round, part-time position averaging 20 hours per week.  The schedule we are looking to fill is Mondays 1:00 p.m. - 5:15 p.m., Tuesdays 3:00 p.m.-9:15 p.m., Fridays 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and one full weekend per month (Saturday 9:00 a.m.-5:15 p.m. and Sunday 12:45 p.m.- 5:15 p.m.).  Salary from $16.00 per hour depending on qualifications.  Benefits include enrollment in the IMRF pension system, vacation leave, personal leave, and sick leave.

The library accepts volunteer applications, which are kept on file for six months. There are a limited number of volunteer positions available and when an opening occurs, the applications in the file are checked for appropriate candidates to be interviewed for the position.
