There's No Place That's Home: a month of homelessness awareness
Join us this month as we discuss homelessness in our community.
It’s fall in Downers Grove. There’s a crisp feeling in the air, a welcome change from the sweltering heat. With the transformation of seasons comes a growing sense of awareness; not everyone in Downers Grove has a place to call their own, and winter is coming. The shelter season begins in October. The Downers Grove Public Library is a place for those with nowhere else to go to have a quiet place to read, get warm, and find resources. In the month of October, the library will partner with DuPage Pads, Hope’s Front Door, and other local leaders to focus on programming aimed at raising awareness about a unique Downers Grove demographic - those without homes of their own. There’s No Place That’s Home is sponsored by the Downers Grove Public Library Foundation to help promote learning more about those in our library, and community, that have no other place to go. As library staff, we know these faces, these names, and we interact with them every day. They are incredible community members who are kind-hearted and brave. We want them to have a place to call their own, but we can’t do it on our own.
This month, the library is hosting four events for raising awareness about what issues are at hand, what the community is doing, and what solutions are in reach.

Sleeping in my Jeans is about a teenage girl who finds herself homeless with her family, grappling with everyday life and survival. The author of the book will be joining us remotely, and together we will be discussing the book and sharing stories. Books will be available one month before the discussion at the Ask Us Desk for pick up.
The Downers Grove Public Library Foundation is happy to fund homelessness awareness events in October. Its $1520 gift includes a film screening of “The Public” at Tivoli Theatre, and copies of Sleeping in My Jeans for the One Community, One Read book discussion. The Foundation funds extraordinary gifts, beyond taxpayer support, to inspire and engage ideas and strengthen DGPL as a cornerstone in our community.
