SEASPAR (the South East Association for Special Parks And Recreation) is a special recreation association that provides dynamic programs and quality recreation services for people with disabilities residing in 12 community service areas including Downers Grove. SEASPAR offers year-round recreation programming for all ages and all disabilities, including weekly social, artistic, and fitness programs; special events and trips; Special Olympics athlete training; adapted sports; and more! SEASPAR’s longest-running annual event, a competitive swim meet for Special Olympics athletes, celebrated its 40th anniversary in November 2018.
The Downers Grove Park District and four surrounding park districts (Darien, Lisle, Westmont, Woodridge) formed SEASPAR in 1976 to fulfill a shared vision of serving all residents’ recreation needs regardless of ability. SEASPAR strives every day to help participants discover their abilities, achieve their potential, and realize their dreams.
Downers Grove is the largest of the twelve communities SEASPAR serves and has the most participation in SEASPAR programming. In a single year, SEASPAR served 146 separate Downers Grove residents, totaling over 27,000 service hours. Many SEASPAR participants have earned awards such as the Cultural Artist of the Year Award, and gold medals in the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games (gymnastics and swimming).
Numerous awards earned by SEASPAR include the Chamber Choice Award from the Downers Grove Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Therapeutic Recreation Section’s Program Award for Adapted Music Lessons from the Illinois Park and Recreation Association.
